OLAP Patterns: A pattern-based approach to multidimensional data analysis

Users of a business intelligence (BI) system employ an approach referred to as online analytical processing (OLAP) view multidimensional data from different perspectives. Query languages, e.g., SQL or MDX, allow for flexible querying but query formulation is often time-consuming and cognitively challenging many users. Alternatives using language, graphical OLAP clients, parameterized reports, dashboards, are not full-blown alternative language. Experience in cooperative research projects with industry led the following observations regarding use queries practice. First, within same organization, similar repeatedly composed scratch order satisfy information needs. Second, across organizations even domains, structures scratch. Finally, vague requirements frequently early stages project potentially lead rushed development later stages, which can be alleviated by best practices composition. In engineering, knowledge about best-practice solutions arising challenges documented represented patterns. that spirit, pattern describes generic solution composing allows BI user certain type need given fragments conceptual model.
